Each one of us loves watching video content as compared to static content. Videos have become an essential part of our lives, could be for tutorials or reviews we all end up looking for a video every day. Today's generation uses videos in almost every aspect of their lives.  But, does it also irk you when you watch a blurry, grainy, or speckled video? Yeah right, we know it happens with us too. Therefore, to get good high-quality videos it is best you use videos with high res. In this article, we will take you through what video resolution is, what are its categories, and all related information.

What is Video resolution?

You must be familiar with the terms used in videography like 360p, 480p, 720p, and 1080p. If not this then you must have definitely heard the terms like SD, HD, Full HD, Quad high definition, Ultra HD(4K), and 8K. Let us begin by understanding what resolution is, it is the measure used to determine the sharpness and clarity of a picture or video. It measures the number of pixels by taking into account the WxH which is width and height.

What about pixels? These are tiny squares that constitute a digital image. So, video resolution represents the total number of horizontal lines present in each frame in a video from top to bottom. This means a 480p video has 480 lines stacked one above the other where each line is 852 pixel wide. Therefore, while writing the resolution of a 480p video we write it as 852X480 pixel. While the "p" in 480p is often misunderstood as pixels it stands for progressive scan. It is the typical method for loading the pixels in each new frame of a video. Here, all of them appear on the screen at once whereas in an alternate method which is called interlaced scan where a pixel for each new frame loads in alternating line. now that we know what exactly it is and how it contributes to the clarity of a video let us move ahead to see what are its kinds.

Types of Video Resolution

Before getting into the various kinds of video resolutions we would like to discuss the kinds of resolution first. There are two of them. First is the spatial resolution which means how many pixels are contained in each frame. The other is the temporal resolution which means the number of frames shown per second.  There are many categories of video resolution as discussed above. Here we will discuss them in detail.

360p(480x360)-

Here,  360 lines are stacked one above the other from top to bottom of the screen and are 480 pixels wide. This is the reference we make to width X height in the resolution. In other words, it is 480 across and 360 downwards. This is considered as standard or base resolution for Youtube and is labelled as 360p. This is considered as the lowest resolution supported by most hardware and is also less computationally demanding. It is supported very well on a mobile phone device but when we talk about video cameras most of them do not support them at all.

480p (858x480)-

This type is made when 480 elements are put together one above the other and each is 858pixel wide. This is considered a good resolution to view videos on mobiles and laptops. Earlier this was considered as the standard definition. This is more commonly known as the "DVD-Quality" though it is not HD.

720p resolution (1280x720) -

Also known as half or standard HD, this resolution is where the actual high definition starts. Anything below this is called standard definition. It has 720 lines from top to bottom each 1280 pixel wide. The video is sharper than the previous 480p(about twice). This is because it contains more frames per second. Further, it is the image resolution mostly used for sports by HD channels because a lot of movement happens during airtime. As opposed to the earlier two resolutions this can be used to view on larger screens like computer monitors with much clarity.

1080p (1920x1080)-

This is called the HD resolution. Here it means that it has 1080 lines stacked on top of each other each being 1920p wide. This is an example of spatial resolution. It is said to emphasize more pixels per frame in a time period. A favourite for television stations this is a great option for sharing on social media and for larger screens like computers since it gives crystal clear playback. And yes above all it does not have a huge file size but it still gives you crisp digital video.

4K (3840X2160) -

The most common word that we hear these days is 4K resolution. It is often called the ultra high definition or UHD. The resolution is 3840 X2160. Though it is almost similar to HD it gives a great option to zoom in and edit without actually having to worry about the condition of the video. It is best suited for larger displays.

8K (7680X4320)-

This is an extremely high-res video option. Using this makes it easier for videomakers to edit and zoom. There is very little chance of pixelation on using this resolution. Another important advantage of this is the ability to reframe. Reframing allows to do a great close-up and also does not deter the quality of the video.

After knowing about the categories, you must be thinking about the file sizes. Even if you shoot in 4K or 8K you do not have to worry about the file size. Video compression lets you convert video files to a lesser file size and at the same time the display resolution does not change. Video compression just reduces the amount of data in a video without losing any data. The display device will show the same video quality as it had earlier. After using video compression it requires less storage space without any change in video resolution.
