The exciting history of video content

Video marketing may be picking up now. But video has been around for over a century and more. There have been arguments about which was the first video ever. In 1878, Eadweard Muybridge, an English photographer very creatively shot "The Horse in motion". He used 24 still photographs of a horse and used them to create an illusion of motion.

The film was only 3 seconds long, and it was silent. However, even though the film gave an illusion of motion, it wasn't exactly a video. In 1888, Louis Le Prince, a French inventor used a single-lens camera and paper as his film, to record a glimpse of an afternoon in his father-in-law's garden with his brother playing the accordion. The video is deemed is the oldest surviving video film by the Guinness Book of Records. The video is called Roundhay Garden Scene, and it is only 2.11 seconds long.

In the 1800s it was still difficult to create videos because of the lack of devices. But in 1895, Auguste and Louis Lumiere patented the first-ever cinematograph. They brought together film and projection and also released their first movie Sortie de l'usine Lumière de Lyon to the public.

Until 1932 everything was black and white. But after the invention of the technicolor in 1932, the revolution in the film industry began. Fantasia and The Wizard of Oz are the two major movies that used technicolor.

Between 1952 and 1962 something changed dramatically. In 1954 the first-ever color TV was sold and in 1962, the first-ever satellite TV was created. This made it easy to bring more videos to the masses.

Super 8 camera—an improvement to Eastman Kodak’s 8 mm film was released in 1965, driving many aspiring filmmakers to follow their passion. Then came the age of camcorders, in 1982, JVC and Sony revealed the world’s first at CES. Camcorders brought still images and videos together, so it was a huge phenomenon in the 1980s.

The 1990s was an age of transition. Not only was the world moving into a new millennium, but it was also on the brink of technological advancements. In 1992, Sharp—became the first company to create a colored LCD screen which would become the future of televisions. And in the following year, Ampex released a breakthrough invention: the first digital video camera called the DCT, which allowed hours of motion recording all on one tap. Filmmaking and recording became easier than ever.

In 1997, Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) took over VHS, and life as we know it changed. It was also the year Netflix was first founded. While Netflix may have become popular in the last couple of years, it has been around for more than two decades.

The 2000s changed the way we watched videos. It wasn't  only TV where we could watch video content now there was YouTube. In 2005, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim created YouTube as a video-sharing platform. Google bought YouTube in 2096, and we all now have YouTube on our smartphones. It has become an integral part of video marketing in the last decade.

Over the years the video content has evolved and adapted. Nowadays, you can shoot a video with your iPhone, that wouldn't have been possible 50 years back.

Since the conception of YouTube, the way we see videos has changed. After YouTube other social media platforms came cropped up like Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, and Snapchat. All these platforms are useful in creating and sharing videos.

It was predicted that in 2021, an average Joe would consume 100 minutes of video every day.
