We’re mostly familiar with cover photos that adorn our personal profile pages, Did you know you can add cover videos for your business pages?

What are Facebook Cover Videos?

Cover videos take centre stage in your page when a user browses your Facebook page. It takes up one of the most prominent spaces and allows you to spotlight your most creative content to capture the attention of your audience!

The best part about Facebook cover is that it has ‘public’ visibility, so anyone has the ability to view it. It is not dependent on whether they are fans of your page. They can see everything your business has to offer, so be sure to jazz up your Facebook page for your potential customers!

Dimensions

Facebook recommends that your Facebook Page cover video be at least 820 x 312 pixels. For the best results, the resolution of the video for your Facebook cover should be 820 x 462 pixels. These are the latest specifications from Facebook (at the time of writing).

Bear in mind that Facebook constantly updates their specs so be sure to double-check! Upon uploading your video cover, Facebook automatically resizes it to a 16:9 aspect ratio.

On the Facebook mobile app, the sides of the cover are cut off, making it 640 pixels wide by 360 pixels tall. Hence, to ensure no content is lost on smartphones, ensure any text used in the video is centered.

Duration

Your Facebook page cover video should be between 20 and 90 seconds. If you later decide to remove your cover video, the video won’t be automatically deleted and will still be available in your Page’s video library.

Size

Try to keep your file size small so users with slower browsing speeds can still view your video easily. Facebook did not specify any file size but overall across the site, videos must be less than 1.75GB.

How to upload/change a Facebook video cover:

  1. Go to your Page.
  2. Click Edit in the bottom right of your cover photo or video.
  3. Select ‘Choose From Videos’ to use a video you’ve already uploaded to your Page.
  4. Select a video from your existing videos.
  5. After the video has uploaded, reposition the video by clicking it and dragging it up or down, then click ‘Next’.
  6. Click the arrows to scroll through up to 10 thumbnail options for your cover video. The thumbnail image may be used when someone hovers over your Page’s name to get more context about your Page. Also, choose here whether you want the video to loop or not.

Click ‘Save Changes’.

What are the benefits of a video cover on Facebook?

Create and drive more engaging and rich experiences for your audience. Take advantage of Facebook covers to impress your audience. Facebook has made the cover video feature available since 2017 and we want to help you take advantage of this space to create more engaging interactions for your audience!

1. Introduce people to your brand and people

When a user visits your Facebook Page direct, the cover is the first thing they see and associate with your brand. You know what they say “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” And, first impressions are the most lasting.

Aim to leave a positive first impression. They’ll probably start scrolling through your page for content in seconds, but that first image or video is a unique and immersive opportunity to seal in your brand image.

Your Facebook cover informs people who you are, what you do, what you’re like, and what your company is all about.

2. Share your latest product offering

The video serves as an effective hook for product placement advertisements. When users visit your page, they are usually interested to find out more about your company and your offerings. It would be good to feed their curiosity with an engaging way of featuring your products. This can effectively hook in your viewers and generate views for video assets which you’ve invested time, money and energy into creating.

3. Promote an upcoming sale or event

Let’s face it, who doesn’t love a good sale? Also, who would want to miss out on a fun upcoming event! Keep your audience in the loop by updating your Facebook page with new content. You’ll be surprised how much traffic you can get from your Facebook Page.

Repurpose your content and share them across multiple social media channels to reach your target audience in all the nooks and crannies. Let your content work harder for you!

How to make a good Facebook cover video?

1. Keep it short

Viewers need to know exactly what to expect from your video as soon as they hit play, so keep the main contents of your video to within 10 seconds or shorter. You can loop it to fit the 20 seconds limit. Trim out the unnecessary stuff! This would maximize audience engagement and entice people to continue clicking through your page.

2. Consider how your video will be received with and without audio

When people visit your Page, the cover video will start playing automatically. The video will play with the sound muted, so consider how your video will be received without audio. There’s a mute/unmute option in the lower right-hand corner of the cover video.

On Facebook, almost 85% of videos are watched without sound! And that’s saying a lot.

3. Use subtitles or on-screen text

Not-so-new newsflash: The bulk of video watching happens at work, on mute.

If the message of your video is not easily communicated through the action alone, you should consider adding subtitles. That way, even without sound, the viewer can appreciate the story you’re trying to tell!

4. Hook your viewers

Entice your viewers into discovering additional details about the subject with snippets of information to elicit a desire to know more. For instance, cool logo animation videos are getting increasingly popular as Facebook cover videos. It conveys a lot of small information about the brand and its image effectively in a short amount of time.

Simply put, make it exciting and interesting!

5. Make sure your video starts and ends with a natural loop

Should you enable the looping function when you are uploading your Facebook page cover video, make sure there is cohesion between the start and end of the video. This would make the video look like a whole and more natural on your page, especially if you’ve enabled the looping video option. (See How to upload/change a Facebook video cover above)

Small Note

Bear in mind when choosing a video for Facebook covers, it should follow the Pages Terms. Cover videos can’t be deceptive, misleading or infringe on anyone’s copyright.

Why Is There No Option to Upload a Facebook Cover Video?

Since the feature launched in 2017, many users, brands, and creators have uploaded cover videos on their Facebook pages as Facebook cover videos help distinguish your brand from the rest. Furthermore, great videos could make an excellent first impression for your potential customers.

However, Facebook decided to remove the feature in April 2021 — resulting in your existing cover videos being replaced automatically by a screenshot of your video or a thumbnail image.

Due to this, there’s no longer an option to upload Facebook cover videos since 2021. While this might be a massive blow to your brand because you’ve essentially lost a valuable piece of content to flaunt for your brand, you can always use Facebook banners to do the same thing.
